The Angel Tree of Lights
For the fourth year, the Cedar Hill/St. John's CDC sponsored an Angel Tree on Main Street, Boonton.
Angel Trees are erected by towns, schools, hospitals, and other
non-profit organizations. The most famous user of this method of
raising funds is the Salvation Army, which has these trees all across
the country. Our Angel Tree of Lights is designed to honor those who
have touched our lives. Ornaments made by the children are purchased,
placed on the tree and designated as honoring someone, living or
deceased, who has touched the donators life in a meaningful way. We
have been asked to honor friends, relatives, new babies as well as
grandparents, particular soldiers or soldiers in general. Many people
add a few extra dollars to mention a pet.
This year a 13-foot pine was donated by Plut's Christmas Tree Farm,
owned by relatives of Martha Kagan. It was trucked up here from Long
Valley free of charge by one Good Samaritan, wrestled into an upright
position by three others — one of whom was conscripted on the
spot — and lighted. The electricity is courtesy of Jim, owner of
Bob's Men's Shop and thanks to him, the tree was visible through
December. Different merchants in the town offered to put up displays
explaining the project and allowing people to participate.
On Monday, December 19, 2007, it was left dark and on the evening of
the 20th, lighted again and decorated with the hand-made ornaments amid
caroling by the children, their supporters and friends. Once again, the
ceremony brought all participants back to the original meaning of
Christmas.
